Lightweight FRP Platforms The Main Difference

FRP Engineering was contacted by a client with what appeared to be a pretty straight forward job on first look. A platform, walkway and stairs were required to replace a rotted timber structure and to provide access down a step bank to a river below. It had to be designed to met the relevant Australian standards (AS1657-2013 & AS 1170).

Where the job became a little more involved was the location. It was in the middle of nowhere and access was limited to “whatever you can carry in by hand”. For years, the job was put on hold while a suitable solution could be found by which time the existing timber platform was well past its used by date.

Steel was considered but proven to be far to heavy to carry down the steep bank and over the dam wall. Aluminium was then looked at however the cost of fabrication meant the client had to keep looking.

After much deliberation, FRP Engineering provided a solution that ticked all the boxes.

The lightweight nature of the FRP structural elements coupled with the design meant that components were easily carried to the site and assembled without the use of any specialised lifting equipment.

Slippery Entrance gets Non-slip FRP Upgrade

For years, residents had to contend with a dangerous, slippery entrance to and from the carpark. The area is exposed to the elements and Many options were tried including rubber mats, tile coating and etching. Nothing came close to solving the problem until the guys at Makerite Contracting thought outside the box and contacted FRP Engineering.

The decision was made to install 15mm thick FRP mesh to the affected area with a custom aluminium surround. The FRP mesh is manufactured using a premium grade resin which has been developed for uninterrupted exposure to both weather and UV. The square mesh surface and the gritted finish satisfy the slip resistance requirements even in the harshest of winter downpours.

South Lakes Dolphins Equipment Cage

FRP Engineering was approached by the South Lakes Dolphins Swimming Club to help them find a way to corral all the swimming equipment they need. Normally the equipment was left lying around where it was getting lost or damaged. Traditional materials like steel or timber were too heavy and cumbersome for the coaching staff and swimmers to move around and were likely to corrode in a short time, so an enterprising parent came to FRP Engineering.

Using FRP Walkway mesh at 15mm thickness, we were able to custom fabricate a cage that is light, secure and will not corrode in the Chlorine rich environment of the swimming arena. Normally used for Roof Walkway, this grating was the perfect product for this application.

“Non-Conductive” FRP Grating

Safety of employees and contractors is paramount for any company. High and low voltage electricity, if not respected, is one such risk that can have significant, if not fatal outcomes.

Traditional methods of construction and more so “materials of construction” have evolved over several decades so that now designers have a viable “substitute” to conductive flooring in switchrooms.

Hierarchy of hazard control is a system used in industry to minimize or eliminate exposure to hazards. It is a widely accepted system promoted by numerous safety organisations. This concept is taught to managers in industry, to be promoted as standard practice in the workplace. When considering the heirachy of hazard control, it would not be possible to eliminate the hazard however the second best method of hazard control is substitution.

Shearing Shed gets a FRP Minimesh Grating Upgrade

The client approached FRP Engineering to assist with the rebuilding of the shearing shed on the property. Shearing sheds are a long term investment and the farm owner was keen to rebuild this one to stand the test of time. He came to the experienced team at FRP Engineering with a plan to find the best possible walkway grating for the project.

The key requirements for the FRP Flooring were:

  1. Must be strong enough to take the load of sheep and shearers;
  2. Must be hardwearing so it lasts many seasons;
  3. Must be slip resistant;
  4. Must not corrode in the harsh environment;
  5. Must not ‘catch’ the hooves of the sheep but must allow for easy clean down.

The experts at FRP Engineering set to work finding a type of walkway mesh that would comply to all the client’s requirements.

Eventually the client settled on a Minimesh style grid mesh flooring with a larger mesh configuration for easy clean down. FRP Engineering was able to use its extensive network of suppliers to get this product fabricated to the exact dimensions to allow for easy installation with minimal cutting and wastage.

The client completed the refurbishment of the Shearing shed on time and on budget thanks to the smart application of composite materials.
